We all know we should drink more water and that the health benefits of doing so are numerous. So drinking water should not be a problem, right? If only it were that easy! Most people do not drink the amount of water that they should on a daily basis.
Shape Magazine has a great article on the many ways water can be beneficial to you. It helps you stay hydrated, it boosts your metabolism, it keeps you alert and it even prevents headaches. So why doesn’t everyone drink water like they should? I don’t know about anyone else, but for me, I like variety. Plain water just doesn’t do it for me, so I have come up with some creative ways to help me get my water in.
How I Drink More Water
Make Sure Your Water is The Right Temperature.
This seems to be the key for a lot of people. I love ice cold water but that isn’t the case for everyone. Some people like it room temperature while others like it cold but not ice cold. The secret is to find out which temperature works best and tastes best to you.
Add Fruit to Your Water.
Almost any fruit can be infused in your water to make it more enjoyable. My absolute favorite is frozen blackberries! I like to add frozen fruit because it keeps the water cold. You could try adding some watermelon or cantaloupe. Melons have a light flavor that will make your water taste a little sweet. Experiment with different fruits until you figure out your favorites and keep them on hand so you will always be able to drink what you like.
Herbs and Vegetables in Water?
You will be surprised how good some herbs and vegetables make your water taste. I love infusing my water with cucumbers and lemongrass. It is sooo yummy! The flavor is light and refreshing. There are many others that are wonderful too, like basil in your lemon water or vanilla bean with orange slices. If you like spicy drinks try a couple slices of jalapenos with a stalk of celery! This is great to drink with Mexican food!
Maybe Carbonated Water is Your Thing.
If you like your water bubbly then try some carbonated water or seltzer. There are several brands and many varieties to choose from. I absolutely love La Croix Berry Sparking Water. It is all natural and it doesn’t have any artificial sweeteners or sodium. Be careful when choosing this type of water and make sure to read the labels. Some so contain artificial sweeteners and a lot of them have a high amount of sodium which defeats the purpose of drinking water.
Make Drinking Water a Habit.
If you drink water at certain times every day it won’t be long until it becomes a habit. You could drink a glass every morning when you get up and another one with each meal. That takes care of 4 glasses right there! Have another glass mid morning and one more mid afternoon and your total is now up to 6!
Put The Amount of Water You Drink Daily in a Water Jug.
Many experts say you should drink between 48 and 64 ounces of water which is about 6 to 8 glasses per day. I know that seems like a lot and for some people drinking glass after glass of water is almost impossible. If this is the case for you then try putting your water in a container that holds the amount you need to drink. Keep it with you throughout the day and you’ll be surprised how this will help you drink more water.
There’s an App For That!
That’s right, there is an app to help you remember to drink your water. There are several to choose from but I am familiar with Carbodroid and Daily Water. These two have very good ratings and are easy to use. You can set reminders and keep track of how much you have consumed. Most people keep their phone with them all day so you will always have your reminder right beside you.
Get a Water Filter.
It is important that your water tastes good so you will enjoy drinking it. You will never stick with it if you don’t like it. Do yourself a favor and invest in a good water filter for your faucet or get a water bottle or pitcher with a built-in filter. If your refrigerator has water in the door then it is already filtered. Make sure to keep it changed though so your water will taste as good as it can.
Drink Your Water Through a Straw.
I know this sounds silly but for some people, it works. Drinking through a straw helps you drink more water in a shorter period of time. There are several bottles that have straws built in or you could buy some disposable straws to keep around the house. If you have a silly side get some of those fun straws with curves and shapes! Give it a try, it may work for you.
Always Keep Water With You.
Make sure you have your water with you everywhere you go. If you are leaving the house, take some for in the car. While you are sitting around watching TV, keep it beside you. No matter what you are doing keep your water available. If it is handy you are more likely to drink it.
