Getting healthy and fit is a wonderful goal for anyone but for those in an empty nest it is a little harder. Our lifestyles have changed and sometimes we didn’t adjust our lives to compensate for it. We are still cooking enough for a family instead of a couple and we are not running around shuffling our children from place to place every day. In my case, it seems that I am eating more and moving less and my waistline has really suffered.
Did you noticed that I said the goal is to get healthy and fit, not lose weight?. I will more than likely end up losing weight but that is not my ultimate goal. To me, weight is just a number that traps you in a cycle of elation and defeat. If you concentrate on losing weight then you will only end up a slave to your scale. You will weigh yourself constantly and your weight will fluctuate as it normally does. This will do nothing but discourage you because you’ve been doing so good and you still gained weight. You are only setting yourself up to fail when you make losing weight your goal.
If Losing Weight Is Not A Good Goal Then What Is?
Setting small realistic goals that will make you happy and feel good about yourself. For example, I am going on vacation July 8th which is about 3 weeks away. I have some really cute shorts that I want to take with me that I bought last year. They fit me then but now they are a little snug. Probably about 1/2 a size too small. So that is my goal. I want to be able to fit into these shorts in about 3 weeks!
I believe the secret is to set small goals that coincide with some type of event. Make the goals attainable for the time limit that you have. Don’t be unrealistic. I have given myself 3 weeks to drop about 1/2 a size which I should be able to do with no problem. If I was going on vacation next week then that goal would not be realistic.
Get Healthy and Fit by Setting Goals
Remember we are not going to set losing a certain amount of weight as a goal. Instead, let’s try something different. The easiest goals to keep are the ones that you really care about. Take a moment to think about this, if you could choose one thing to concentrate on what would it be? This could be anything from fitting into a certain outfit to building up your stamina to walk 3 miles.
Did you think of something? Great! I knew you could! Now you need a timeframe. What’s coming up in your life? Maybe a family or class reunion, an anniversary, birthday or like me a vacation in the near future. Make the goal and the event work together. If you have a family reunion and you want to fit into a dress 2 sizes too small and the reunion is in 2 weeks you are not going to succeed.
The purpose of setting small attainable goals is so that you will be able to reach that goal and feel good about yourself. Then you can set your next small goal. Re-evaluate and set new goals until you are where you want to be, healthy and fit!
We’ve Got This
I am not going to tell you what you need to do to get to your goal. I know you already know how to do it, it’s the doing it that is always the problem. If you want to get into a smaller size then more calories need to go out then go in. You know how to do this. You have to move more and eat less. Choose to eat healthier options. I’m not telling you anything that you don’t already know.
I’m also not going to advise you to start the latest diet craze. They do not work, not in the long run. Those diet crazes will help you drop a size or two but as soon as you get tired of the craziness, and you will, you will put it all back on again. Bet then you already know that too.
We are all adults and at some point or another, we have had to watch what we ate or start some type of exercise routine. We don’t need someone to tell us what to do or how to do it, we need someone to motivate us. That’s why I decided to write this post. I need motivation and I am sure some of you need it too.
Updates and Posts
I will be writing updates on how I am doing and I would love to hear from you. I would love it if you would put your goals and how you are making them work in the comments below. As I come across good articles or a particularly wonderful healthy meal I will post about them also.
What I will not post about is how to lose 25 pounds in the next month. I won’t be posting about the latest smoothie that will make the pounds melt off or the newest exercise machine guaranteed to give you 6 pack abs in 2 weeks either. I want to do this the right way. It is important to me so I can play with my grandchildren for years to come! Let’s do this together!!
