I just discovered that I have a passion for something Phillip has been doing for years! He has been making hand crafted pens for at least 10 years. I have always admired them but I have always been too busy to pick up another hobby. After a little coaxing on his part I have been experimenting helping him pour some molds for the pens and over the weekend I actually started turning them! I love it!
There is something very satisfying about seeing something you have created come together and that’s just what crafting a pen does. There is a lot more that goes into making hand crafted pens than you would guess. It takes a lot of knowledge and even more skill to get one together just right. But the finished product is worth it.
Something to do Together
Like I said before, Phillip has been crafting pens for several years. It has always been his hobby and not something I thought I would be capable of doing. I have always loved his pens. I love when he gives me a new one that I can take to the office and show off!
Just recently he started making his own molds or what pen makers call blanks. It peaked my interest and when he saw that I was curious about it he asked if I wanted to try mixing one. I jumped at the chance. We had fun mixing different dyes with resins and picking colors that would go together. I enjoyed watching him turn the blanks down to the shape of a pen and then putting it all together.
While I was standing there watching he stopped the lathe and held one of the carving tools out to me. I was really scared that I would mess it up but he showed me how to hold the tool properly and how to carve the blank without gouging it. I can now get it started and down to a pen shape but I let him finish it because it needs to be as smooth as glass and I am just not that good… yet!
We are always looking for things that we can do together and I don’t know if Phillip realizes it or not but he has just gained a partner in his hand crafted pen business! What I really love is this is just one more way that Phillip and I can spend time together enjoying each others company.
Yes, He Does Sell His Hand Crafted Pens!
Usually, Phillip makes a few hand crafted pens around Christmas time and sells them to friends and friends of friends. The closer it gets to Christmas the harder it is to keep up with the orders! I am excited that I will be able to help him this year. It always brings in a few extra dollars for the holiday.
I was able to talk him into letting me put up a few to see if there is an interest in them! I can’t wait to get them together so I can show them to you!
In the coming days, I will be creating a page to show his pens here on Chick in an Empty Nest. These will all be hand crafted pens. I think you will be surprised at what we are able to do with a block of acrylic or wood. They are absolutely beautiful! I can’t wait to share them with you!
So keep checking back! I will have those hand crafted pens up and ready to go in the next few days!
