When you don’t have children at home it’s easy to plan a last minute getaway. This is my favorite perk of living in an empty nest. You don’t have to worry about getting a baby sitter or what your teenager is doing while you are away!
Our Weekend Getaway
After the wonderful vacation to Dunedin, FL that we just got back from, you would think we would be ready for a quiet weekend at home. Wrong!! Not this couple! We decided on Friday morning that we wanted to take a quick trip to the Pearl River Resort in Philidelphia, MS. All it took to make it happen was a quick phone call to get a room for Saturday night. It took about 20 minutes to plan this last minute getaway.
We did spend a quiet evening at home on Friday night. We slept in on Saturday morning which is a luxury for both of us since we normally have to get up at 5:00 to get ready for work. Then we piddled around the house for a little while getting things together for our little getaway. By noon we were headed out the door on the way to our weekend of fun!
It is a 3-hour drive so we passed the time alternating between catching up on each others week and listening to an audio book called Joyland by Stephen King. Of course, Phillip serenaded me with his usual Boys to Men goes to the casino. We always enjoy our drives together.
Pearl River Resort
We like going to the Pearl River Resort. They are reasonably close to us and we always have a good time while we are there. The main portion of the resort is comprised of 2 casinos that are across the street from each other and are connected by a skywalk. The Silver Star and The Golden Moon are like sister casinos. When you go to one you always end up at the other one too!
There is also The Dancing Rabbit Golf Club, Bok Homa Casino, and Geyser Falls Water Theme Park. We haven’t been to the water park but we have visited Bok Homa Casino. We don’t play golf but we stayed at the Dancing Rabbit when the Moon and Star were booked up because it is just a few minutes down the road from the casinos and they have a shuttle that takes you and brings you back.
The Golden Moon
This visit we stayed at The Golden Moon. It has recently been remodeled and the rooms are very comfortable and clean. As nice as the room is we don’t spend much there, we are usually down in the casino. We got there right around check in which is 4:00 and was in the casino about 30 minutes later!
This casino is not as crowded as the Silver Star. I’m not really sure why. It has a mixture of new and older slot machines and several table games including my favorite Three Card Poker. I like the way it is laid out in a circle around the Center Bar. There is plenty of room between the slot machines so you don’t feel like you are sitting in someone else’s lap!
I always tell myself I am going to sit down at a dollar machine and play it the whole evening but I am afraid I will pick a cold machine and end up back in the room watching TV the rest of the night! Instead, I played mostly penny and nickel slots. I did ok this time but nothing to really shout about. Phillip was having a pretty rough time so we decided to head over to the other casino.
The Silver Star
We normally stay at the Silver Star but we planned this getaway last minute and they were booked up. I like playing there better because the crowd seems to be more enthusiastic and I love listening to the live bands they have on the weekends. Even though the machines are not as spaced out as they are at the Golden Moon there are more of them so you don’t feel claustrophobic.
We spent a little time playing the slots and neither one of us were getting ahead. In fact, we were pretty much headed toward our room if we didn’t slow down! So we decided to get something to eat and just chill out for a little while.
Normally we go to the buffet but they were extremely crowded. It looked like we wouldn’t be able to even get seated for at least an hour! We decided to try out Stats Bar & Grill. It is a barbecue restaurant that has a sports bar feel to it. We got seated relatively quick but we waited for our food for almost 45 minutes! Just as we were almost ready to leave we finally got our order. We noticed that the couple that was in front of us waiting to be seated still didn’t have their food. Phillip actually offered them some of his!! He can talk to anyone!
We finished up our meal and played on the slots a little more but on this getaway, lady luck was not on our side! We went back to the Moon and after playing a little more we decided it was time to try our hand at poker. Finding a seat was hard because they were pretty full but we managed to find one seat at a three card poker table. Phillip told me to go ahead and he would catch the next one. He’s such a gentleman!
Well, I gave them my money and held up the game for a little while so they could get my chips counted out. I then proceeded to ante up. Boy was I embarrassed when the dealer told me I was at a $10.00 limit table and needed to up my ante!!! I don’t play that high!! Sorry guys but I am not that brave! I had to hold up the game again while I colored up, which means they take your smaller chips and exchange them to larger chips to keep the smaller ones at the table. Of course, Phillip got a good laugh while I felt like crawling under the table!
Shortly afterward we were able to get find a lower limit three card poker table with room for both of us and that’s where we spent the rest of the evening. It was fun and the conversation was entertaining. We didn’t win but our money was lasting longer and it was nice to sit in the same spot for a little while. It was almost 2:00 when we decided to head to our room and end this portion of our getaway.
Table Games Are Fun!
I never played table games until recently. Even though I know how to play poker I didn’t feel like I knew the lingo well enough to keep from making a fool of myself. Guess what? I have found that most of the people playing the smaller limit games are just like me. They are just figuring things out too!
The dealers are great at explaining things and the players that do know how to play love to teach newbies. So if you would like to play but haven’t because you are too unsure of yourself then let me make a couple of suggestions. First, learn how to play three card poker. It is fun and very easy to learn. You never have to raise, you only have to decide to play or not to play. Also, you are only playing against the dealer, not the other players. Second, get on YouTube and watch a few tutorials. Table games are so much fun and nowhere near as complicated as you may think it is.
Last Minute Road Trip
We got up the next morning and decided to head on back home instead of staying and playing since we didn’t seem to be very lucky this visit. We packed up and hit the road around 10:30. I was just settling in for the trip when Phillip had a great idea.
He had just realized that if we made a little detour and went the back way we could go to the Mississippi State Campus. We would be able to fly the drone over the football stadium. Phillip and I have recently set a goal to fly the drone over all the SEC football stadiums. We have already flown over Auburn which was just a little detour after a visit with our daughter and Florida which was just 10 miles out of the way on our way to Dunedin.
The original getaway plan was to go through Tuscaloosa and fly over Alabama’s stadium on the way home. We just simply entered Mississippi State University into Google Maps and we were on the way!
Phillip takes the DJI Phantom 4 with us just about everywhere we go and flies quite often. He knows the rules and FAA regulations by heart. When we got to the stadium and found a quiet out of the way area he turned on the app he uses to make sure we are safe to fly. It showed that we were within 5 miles of an airport so he called the number listed and spoke to the gentleman about what our plans were. He told us we would not be interfering with any flights but that the University had a drone policy and after reading it we would not want to fly there. Phillip told him thank you and hung up.
He pulled up the University policy on google and read over it and since we are hobbyists it did not pertain to us. We put the drone up in the air and flew around their beautiful stadium. It was a short flight but we got the pictures and video we wanted.
Calling all Cars!!
Just as we brought the drone down the police pulled up. They asked for Phillip’s ID and questioned him about what he was doing there. This could have been a bad situation but Phillip knew his rights and knew the regulations. By the time we left, the police we oohhhing and awwwing over our drone pictures! Come to find out the person he had talked to at the airport had called the police. Go figure, sometimes you do the right thing and it bites you in the butt! It was kind of exciting though!
Roooooll Tide Roll!
Alabama is the team Phillip has been rooting for his entire life! I never cared much for football until I met him. He has definitely rubbed off on me! I now bleed crimson and white right along with him. There is nothing more thrilling than a football Saturday.
Flying the drone over Bryant-Denny stadium was an exciting prospect but after our latest run in with the police, we decided we better check to see if there are any drone regulations at Alabama. It’s a good thing we did because they have a very strict policy against drones flying over the stadium without written permission.
Since we didn’t have permission we decided to just take the drone up in front of the stadium but not over it. Phillip got a picture or two but we will wait until we have permission to actually fly over the stadium. We only live a couple of hours away so I can see another getaway to Alabama in the near future.
Ending Our Fun Weekend Getaway
We put our things up when we got home and realized that it was almost 5:00. It had been such a hot day we decided to put on our swimsuits and hang out in the pool for awhile. We grabbed a couple of Mike’s Lemonades, cheerleader beer as Phillip calls them, and headed out to the pool. It was the perfect way to cool off.
We ended up spending the rest of the evening just enjoying each other’s company in the pool. It was such a relaxing way to end such a fun weekend. I am ready and looking forward to our next getaway.
