If you have read any of my blog posts then you know that I am not big into exercise but I do like to stay healthy and fit. My Fitbit helps me do just that. It is an easy to use tool to remind me to stay active and drink water.
Phillip bought me my Fitbit Charge 2 last Christmas. I wasn’t sure how useful it would be for me because I don’t do any kind of real fitness routine. I was genuinely surprised at how much I have come to depend on this little gadget!
Here are the basics that this little fitness tool does.
- Steps taken ~ the default is set for 10,000 steps but you can modify the settings on the app.
- Distance covered ~ your total for the day which ends at midnight.
- Calories burned ~ it not only counts what you burn while exercising but also while resting and sleeping.
- Active Minutes with strenuous activity ~ you can break up your exercise into segments and it will total it up.
- Floors climbed ~ the total for the day not just at one time.
- All day heart rate and zones ~ it will tell you which heart rate zone you’re in throughout the day
The Fitbit App
You don’t have to use the app but in my opinion, you should. The app works with Fitbit to help you understand your daily totals, give you insight on how to improve what you are doing, and it helps motivate you to do even more.
The Fitbit on its own will tell you how you are doing and remind you that you need to drink water or get up and move but the Fitbit app helps you understand why. It has an exercise calendar that you can look back on and see what you’ve accomplished. You can use that knowledge to help you meet your goals.
What I really like about the Fitbit app is that you can connect with your friends on Facebook that have Fitbits so you can motivate and challenge each other. Notifications will pop up and tell you that you need to get up and move or that you need to drink more water. I have mine set to remind me when it is time to start getting ready for bed because I never seem to get enough sleep.
So, in short, you don’t have to have the Fitbit app but once you use it you will understand why it is important to use it along with your Fitbit.
How I use my Fitbit
I wear my Fitbit 24/7 except when I take a shower. When I first got it I just wore it to see how many steps I took during my average day. I was really surprised how little I moved. After a few days, I got familiar with it. I learned how to use the app and I started setting some goals for myself. I needed to get up and move and drink more water. Because of my Fitbit, I now do both.
It has also helped me to realize that I was not getting enough sleep. It tracks your sleep cycle and even calculates your awake times during the night. This was an eye opener for me. Now I am more conscious about getting the amount of sleep that I need and I feel much better because of it.
I will never be someone who exercises an hour a day or goes on a 5-mile run because that just isn’t me. This chick is just your everyday average person who wants to stay in good health and reasonably good shape. I need reminders and Fitbit does that. I need motivation and Fitbit does that too.
So if you ask me if I use my Fitbit and if I like having a Fitbit then my answer would be yes to both. I am very surprised at how much it helps me think about my health throughout the day and it is worth it just for that! I can honestly say if something happened to it I would buy another one immediately. It has become that important to me.
I don’t know if you will feel the same way as I do but I have a feeling you will.
